How I accidentally started a business and what I learned from the process.
Hi there!
Picture this: you're at the mall when a really cute garment catches your eye. As you move closer, cute outfit ideas begin formulating and you are so excited by the time you finally reach the item...until you see the price tag. Suddenly, the garment isn’t so cute anymore.
Now I don’t know about you guys but I’ve been in this situation all too often. In the case of these butterfly sweatshirts, I had seen similar ones to the one I made but they were FIFTY DOLLARS. If you’re anything like me, I don’t have an unlimited budget to buy everything.
And so, channeling my fashion&DIY-loving self, I put away the wallet and brought out my sewing needles as I made my first sweatshirt.
At this point, you're probably thinking that's great and all, but how did you turn one sweatshirt into an entire business?
It all boiled down to one key realization: I prioritized passion over profit as my purpose.
You see, I’ve always believed in doing things with a purpose and this business is no different. Prior to the realization, there was simply no motivation besides profit in making the butterfly sweatshirts.
But, once I connected my love for fashion&DIY to my love for The Dragonfly Foundation, I was motivated by a greater purpose; thus, the birth of my business.
As for why The Dragonfly Foundation, the story could be an entire blog post on its own. In short, I am a member of the Fashion for the Cure committee, where we annually produce a charity fashion show to benefit The Dragonfly Foundation.
To me, these butterfly crewnecks allow me to make a direct contribution to the foundation. Since I decided to donate every dollar of profit back to The Dragonfly Foundation, I’m driven by the knowledge that each sweatshirt sold is able to help and make a positive impact on the lives of these kids with cancer.
As today marks the one month anniversary of my start, I'm excited to announce that there have already been over 90 orders, thus, over $1,000 donated! That means more care packages and once-in-a-lifetime memories can be provided for these families!
As I end my blog post today, I hope that I’ve inspired you to use your passions with purpose. No matter how big or small the impact, I encourage you to give back because I can promise one thing: it is SO worth it.
Much love,
xoxo Grace
